A Poem for Israel 

 

We share the same birthday

she and I

1948 and she sits strong 

vital and free today

and for all those years

surrounded by those

who wish her harm

called a terrorist for defending

her own borders

and her people

while the real terrorists

rave and rant to their god

and call for

a new Holocaust

while denying the other one

Israel is the canary in the coal mine

for all of us

if she is abandoned by her friends

who will stand by us if she is gone

my eyes fill  as I see my country

turn it’s back on her in this time

we share the same birthday

she and I

I hope we both live forever
